Hallau

North of the Rhine in Canton Schaffhausen lies the wine village of Hallau with its well-kept villagescape, nestling among the extensive vineyards, farming areas and forests of Klettgau, the valley between Hochrhein and the Black Forest.
Hallau’s charm comes from stately buildings, splashing fountains, quaint lanes and corners. With 150 hectares, the spot boasts the largest continual area of vineyards in German-speaking Switzerland. The Schaffhausen Wine Museum in the Haus zur Krone offers an added overview. Hallau is also the home of Rimuss, the famous sparkling grape juice and neighbouring Trasadingen has an educational wine trail.

After a visit and a wine-tasting session at one of the Hallauer wine cellars, you can even stay overnight in a wine barrel to recover. Sleep like Diogenes: during the summer months Hallau offers 40 beds in splendid wine barrels.

The landmark of Hallau is the Sankt Moritz Church, built in 1491 and dedicated to St. Mauritius. Visible from afar, the «wedding church» dominates the village from its elevated position on an outcrop of the Hallauerberg.

Exhibits at the local museum include a large collection of weapons, uniforms and national costumes from the Hallau region. The museum also houses a Lino linotype machine which is still in operation.

At the Mondglas Hallauer Show Glassworks, visitors can get a close-up view of how red-hot molten glass is shaped into a work of art or a useful object. Horse-drawn carriage rides through the lovely Klettgau landscape are a firm favourite for company and club outings, wedding trips and many other occasions. Hiking and cycling is also very popular in Klettgau - also often called «the wine barrel and granary» in local dialect. The Hallau swimming pool on the vineyard slopes offers the chance to cool down.
