Gossau nestles between Alpstein and the Bodensee, at the gateway to the Appenzell region and the cantonal capital of St. Gallen. Gossau has two attractive excursion destinations: the private Walter Zoo and the Hilti Motorbike Museum.
The Abenteuerland Walter Zoo with its chimpanzee enclosure is Switzerland’s largest private zoo, with over one hundred species of animals from all continents. Other attractions include a romantic pond, barbecue spots and play facilities for children, as well as shows in a circus tent from April to October.
Another Gossau attraction is the Hilti Motorbike Museum. The entire history of the motorbike can be encountered here, with around 140 exhibits from 70 brands. On show are commonplace machines, racing and sports machines, military machines and more.
Oberberg Castle above Gossau is the town’s oldest preserved residence. A popular excursion destination, it offers visitors spectacular views as far as the Säntis. The building is under a preservation order and was rebuilt in 1958 after a fire. Today it is a popular excursion restaurant with a small castle museum.
The ruins of two fortresses (Helfenberg and Rosenberg) as well as three churches are more Gossau attractions worth mentioning: the Andreaskirche with its Renaissance elements and Bible garden (over 100 various plants), the neo-baroque style Haldenbüelkirche with art-nouveau décor and the modern Pauluskirche from the 1960s.
The beautiful urbanistic Henessenmühle group comprises half-a-dozen historical buildings arranged around a square. Each building represents a different industrial branch: mill, sawmill, bakery, inn, farming and fruit pressing.
Gossau also has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, minigolf and a 1.5 km long, adventure trail with a barbecue spot. The trail is suitable for baby buggies. Gossi the dragon lives in the Buechenwald (forest) and looks forward to visitors throughout the year.
