Garschlu

Garschlu lies at the Maienberg middle station of the aerial gondola above Wangs near Sargans, on the way to Pizol. At 1119m altitude, Garschlu affords superb views of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding mountain chains.
Both the Maienberg and Schönbühl mountain guesthouses are near the middle station of the aerial gondola and make ideal departure or arrival points for hikes and mountain bike tours in summer, or as accommodation close to the ski runs in winter. Accommodation for groups and also holiday apartments are available on this alp.

Summer

The slopes of the Pizol Region are a popular haunt for hikers in summer. Those taking the Walsa-Höhenweg (high-level trail) from Walensee to the Sargans region (or the other way) come past Garschlu. The long tour is divided into a three-day hike, but can also be hiked in other stages or just sections. Numerous other hikes are also signposted from Garschlu/Maienberg. Nordic walkers will also find suitable stretches here. For bikers, Garschlu is the attractive goal for the sometimes tough ascent from Bad Ragaz or Wangs.

Winter

Garschlu/Maienberg lies in the heart of the Pizol winter sports region, on the run from Furt down to Wangs. The Furt - Maienberg - Wangs sledge run also passes here and at seven kilometres is one of the longest sledge runs in Switzerland – and when snow conditions allow runs down to the valley. The Pizol skiing region lies at between 1600 and 2220 m altitude. Winter sports fans will find 40 km of runs, a freeride paradise, a winter sports school, cross-country runs and interesting ski tour routes. Snowshoe trekkers will find signposted trails, and winter walkers will love the attractive panoramic high-level trail.

Highlights

  • Pizol - the Bad Ragaz local mountain at 2220 m altitude affords superb views from the Rhine Valley to the Bodensee with attractions for hikers Nordic walkers, bikers and skiers.
  • 5-Lakes Hike on Pizol – the four-hour hike past five crystal-clear mountain lakes with fabulous views of the Alpine world, is one of the classic mountain hikes in Eastern Switzerland.
