Frinvillier

Frinvillier belongs to the municipality of Vaufellin and lies between Biel and Tavannes. Throughout centuries of erosion, the River Suze has gouged through the first Jura mountain fold to create the wild and romantic Taubenlochschlucht (Dovecote Gorge).
The «classic» hike through the Taubenlochschlucht (Dovecote Gorge) leads uphill from Biel. A bus route runs from town to the «Taubenloch» stop by the lower entrance into the wild and romantic gorge of the Schüss River (La Suze). An around 3 km-long, well-maintained hiking trail leads through the gorge and the first fold of the Jura Mountains from Biel-Bözingen at an altitude of 445 metres to Frinvillier at 516 metres. Throughout centuries of erosion, the Suze has created a fascinating landscape of whirlpools, vertical rock faces, overhangs and spurs, revealing interesting geological formations. There’s a magnificent display when the river is carrying a lot of water. Winter freezes result in fairytale-like ice and snow formations.

Frinvillier can be reached from Biel by railway, bus and via the «Transjurane» motorway, which squeezes through the Taubenlochschlucht. The entrance to the gorge is also accessible via Biel-Leubingen/Evilard cableway and a walk through the woods to Frinvillier. The «Restaurant des Gorges» at Frinvillier is an inn offering food and lodging as well as a play area and small petting zoo for children. The hike through the Taubenlochschlucht can be extended by continuing from Frinvillier in a northerly direction through the transverse valley from Rondchâtel to La Reuchenette and Péry.

A section of the Jurahöhenweg, a long distance high trail along the Jura ridges from Grenchenberg via Plagne, descends steeply to Frinvillier. A long and steady climb over several altitude levels leads westwards to the Chasseral, the highest peak in the Bernese Jura.
