Efringen-Kirchen (D)

Vivid vineyards, colourful forests and lush orchards flourish on the sunny, hills of the Markgräflerland region on the Rhine. Here lies the wine-growing village of Efringen-Kirchen, where several wine cellars offer their fine drops.
The Efringen-Kirchen Municipality extends over an extensive area of the rolling Markgräfler countryside. Here and there the fields and vineyards are interrupted by small hamlets. The nearby Rhine forms the border with France. Intact water-meadow landscapes and the Isteiner Schwellen (rapids) make Efringen-Kirchen a particularly idyllic place to visit.

The peaceful village has a well-kept centre and several inns that are steeped in tradition. The museum in the «Alte Schule» (old school) gives a fascinating insight into the history of Efringen-Kirchen. Topics include the Stone Age flint-stone mines, village life and winemaking of yesteryear.

The Markgräflerland speciality is the Gutedel grape variety, which here finds the best conditions for ripening to produce first-class wine. Grapes from the entire region are pressed in the Markgräflerland Bezirkskellerei (district wine cellars). But private wine cellars also invite you to taste their fine wines. The one-hour wine path tour begins at a wooden barrel holding 7850 litres of wine. The region's winegrowing is explained during the walk through the vineyard slopes.

The Isteiner Klotz at the hamlet of Istein is a distinctive, 80-metre-high rock face in the otherwise gentle hilly landscape. A chapel was hewn out of the rock here some 400 years ago and can still be seen today. Castles and fortifications were continually built on the Istener Klotz thanks to its proximity to the French border; the last time was during World War II. The fortifications were demolished after the war. Today, the Isteiner Klotz is a nature reserve because of the rare plant varieties found there.

Highlights

  • Markgräfler wine - the speciality wine, Gutadel, can be sampled in the Bezirkskellerei (district wine cellars) and various private wine cellars.
  • Museum in the «Alte Schule» (old school) - the history of Efringen-Kirchen is brought back to life.
