Roveredo GR

Roveredo (GR) is near Bellinzona at the lowest part of the southern Graubunden Valle Mesolcina (Misox). A short distance up valley, another Graubunden valley, Val Calanca, branches off. Roveredo is at the intersection of the cantons of Graubunden and nearby Ticino.
Roveredo is a municipality in the Moësa district of Canton Graubunden, not to be confused with Roveredo near Capriasca in the Lugano district of Canton Ticino. Roveredo consists of several hamlets. Some of the hamlets on the detritus cone of the river on the valley floor have merged and form the centre of Roveredo. The southern area of the municipal district includes the narrow Val Traversagna and its tributary valleys that branch out to the Swiss-Italian border.

In 1907, the Graubunden valley of Misox (Italian: Valle Mesolcina) was connected by a narrow gauge railway from Bellinzona to Mesocco. Plans to extend via San Bernadino and Hinterrheintal (Upper Rhine Valley) to Thusis to connect with the main line of the Rhaetian Railway were repeatedly discussed. Instead, the A13 motorway was built and passenger rail transport on the Bellinzona to Mesocco stretch closed in 1972.

Today, tourist passenger trains sometimes operate during the summer months on the remaining tracks from Castione-Arbedo to Cama.

Roveredo’s Catholic San Giulio Church is well worth a visit, a large medieval structure with Gothic elements in the choir and Renaissance features within.

In the neighbouring village of Grono (GR), the Graubunden valley of Val Calanca branches off from Misox to the north. Here is the beginning and end of the «Sentiero Alpino Calanca», a challenging north-south tour between Val Calanca and Misox.

Highlights

  • «Sentiero Alpino Calanca» – a challenging north-south tour between Val Calanca and Valle Mesolcina (Misox). Santa Maria in Calanca near Roveredo is the southern finishing point of this hike.
