Fischingen

Fischingen, the southernmost municipality in Thurgau, called «Tannzapfenland» (fir-cone country) because of its fir forests, is known for its Benedictine monastery, with splendid baroque church on the Jakobsweg (Route of St. James) from Konstanz to Einsiedeln.
The imposing St. Johann Benedictine Monastery, founded in 1138, rises above the southern edge of the village. It provides pilgrims, on the way from Konstanz to Einsiedeln with shelter and refuge and is the only monastery in Thurgau in which monks are active. The monastery complex was renovated and extended in baroque and rococo style in the 17th and 18th centuries. A new monastery church was built from 1685 to 87, and a chapel dedicated to St. Idda was built in 1705. The sandstone Tomb of the Sleeping Saint dates from 1496.

After the Thurgau ban on monasteries was abolished in 1973, a group of monks from Fischingen decided to revive monastery life. Since then the monastery church with its splendid organ resounds to the daily choral prayers of the monks, to which visitors are also invited. Part of the monastery complex is now used for educational purposes, meetings and seminars. Guided tours, exhibitions and concerts are also on the programme.

Fischingen stretches up from the Thurgau Valley floor and borders onto the heights of Untertoggenburg and the Zurich Oberland. The hilly country laced with fir forests – and known as «Tannzapfenland» (fir-cone country) – is a paradise for hikers with superb views of the Alps and Bodensee. Local excursions include the Anwiler Riet nature reserve with its wealth of flora and fauna, and St Martin’s Chapel perched on a hill.

Other leisure attractions at Fischingen are the Kneipp path in Schärlibach, Finnish track, and Vita-Parcours fitness trail, a Senses Trail and an educational Forest Trail. In winter, individual snowshoe treks are popular as is the small family skilift at Oberwangen.

Highlights

  • Monastery church – baroque style church of the St. Johann Monastery with impressive organ. Daily choral prayers of the monks.
  • St. Idda Chapel - built 1704-08 around the sandstone tomb of St. Idda dating from 1496, oldest architectural monument of the church and monastery complex. Glowing in bright baroque colours, it is considered a place of power.
