Dielsdorf

The stoutest inhabitant of Dielsdorf is 400 years old: the thick oak tree is the record holder in Canton Zurich. Otherwise Dielsdorf, at the foot of the Lägern, is mainly known for its equestrian sport centre; the scene of regular horse races.
Dielsdorf is located in the north-west of Canton Zurich. The municipality lies at the eastern end of the Lägern, the easternmost Jura outcrop, and at the foot of the town of Regensberg. In around 500 AD, Allemanni leader Theodolf founded a settlement known as Theodolfsdorf, later known as Theolstorf and Thielstorf. Important finds are reminders of Allemanni times: nine graves were uncovered during the building of a house; the dead were sent to the afterlife equipped with necklaces, earrings and swords dating back to the 7th century.

The oldest inhabitant in the area is the «dicke Eiche» or stout oak. Canton Zurich’s thickest oak is found in the Schwenkelbergwald forest and is over 400 years old (total height: 33m, trunk height: 11.5m).

The Zurich Racing Club has run an equestrian sport facility at Ried since 1973. A variety of equestrian events takes place on the horse- racing track every year and Dielsdorf is a popular meeting point for lovers of equestrian sports. Dielsdorf also has a sports facility with open air and indoor swimming pools, wellness/sauna, artificial ice rink, ice-hockey pitch etc.

Just above Dielsdorf on the Lägern slopes is Regensberg, a settlement from the first half of the 13th century. At its highest point is a Savoyan-style round tower, today the landmark of the picturesque little town. The town still retains its original layout with three main areas, Schloss, Oberburg and Unterburg: of the renovated buildings in Oberburg, the former Amtshaus (guildhall), Engelfridhaus and Zehntenscheune are particularly worthy of note.

A nearby excursion destination is the Hochwacht on the Lägern, only 15 m lower than the Uetliberg. A vantage platform gives impressive long-distance views with the nearby restaurant an ideal place to stop for a snack.

Highlights

  • Horse-racing track - Switzerland’s leading equestrian-sport centre; Dielsdorf is a firm fixture in the calendar of equestrian sport lovers
  • Neeracherried - one of Switzerland’s last large areas of fenland. The flora and fauna world of the fen is presented at the Nature Conservation Centre on the road between Bülach and Dielsdorf.
  • Regensberg - the impressive location on a rocky promontory and medieval layout add to the appeal of this picturesque country town.
  • Lägern - this eastern promontory of the Jura is a popular hiking area with good vantage points, e.g. Hochwacht with its viewing platform.
