Degersheim

Degersheim, in Canton St.Gallen nestles in a, rolling landscape between the Bodensee and Säntis. In summer a popular starting point for hiking and cycling tours. The Maddenau Convent is in the municipal district of the same name.
Degersheim is on the southeast St.Gallen-Wattwil railway line. The town’s mostly fog-free location gives far-reaching views over the Bodensee and to Alpstein. An open-air pool and an indoor pool (open all year) are ideal for a refreshing swim. Above Wolfertswil and belonging to Degersheim Municipality is Rotmoos, the lowest-lying high moor to the north of the Alps. In winter, Degersheim has three skilifts with floodlit pistes for night-time skiers as well as a cross-country ski piste.

In the 13th century, the foundation stone was laid for the Magdenau Cistercian Convent in a secluded part of the Degersheim-Flawil-Uzwil triangle. The idyllic hamlet of Magdenau is the most valuable area of the region in terms of history and the history of art. The impressive choir stall in the church is well worth seeing. The Kapitelsaal (Chapter Hall) still has its late-Gothic frescoes painted in 1477. The convent was given today’s structural form in the 17th century. Advance reservation is required for visits to the convent and its historically valuable guest wing.

Close to the Magdenau Convent is the former St. Verena Parish Church, popular for weddings. The oldest parts of the building date back to Romanesque times.

Highlights

  • Magdenau Cistercian Convent – small convent in an idyllic, secluded position with valuable guest wing. Visits with advance reservation only.
