Weinfelden

Weinfelden - nomen est omen! Located on the south slopes of the scenic Ottenberg, the tiny town in Thurgau offers a typical intact, well-tended landscape with vineyards, farming, water meadows and renatured stream landscapes.
The Weinfelden region is in the heart of the canton with the Thur Valley, the adjoining heights of the Ottenberg and the plateau south of the River Thur. Weinfelden with its appealing village centre has splendid houses, romantic courtyards and parks. Markets, exhibitions, restaurants, sports facilities, ice rink, indoor and outdoor pools, biking and hiking trails all wait to be discovered. Europe’s first covered, standard inline skating track was built in Weinfelden in 2006.

The Weinfelden Evangelical Protestant Church was built from 1902 to 1904 in art-nouveau style with an impressive interior. Weinfelden Castle was built in the 12th century and restored around 1860.

The name Weinfelden is not derived from wine cultivation but nevertheless wine growing plays an important role, with a vineyard area of about 110 acres. Detailed information is provided on a 4.4-km-long Vineyard Trail. Another trail on a specific subject is a Surveying Trail: 24 panels provide information on surveying techniques from the beginning to modern methods using satellites. Further hiking trails lead through wine growing areas and to restaurants with scenic views on Thurberg/Ottenberg.

Weinfelden is an intersection of the Zurich-Romanshorn SBB line and the Thurbo AG regional railway. Post and PubliCar bus services link Weinfelden with its surroundings. Worthwhile excursion destinations are the timber-framed houses in Amlikon and Märstetten, Bürglen Castle and the suspension bridge in Kradolf-Schönenberg.

Highlights

  • Ottenberg and Thurberg rock spur – vantage points above the town of Weinfelden with views from Arlberg to the Eiger.
  • Norm inline skating track – the first covered facility of its kind in the world: a 200 metre oval track with raised bends.
