Trun
Idyllic Trun on the Vorderrhein river has preserved many historic buildings and its Romanic language to the present day. The sleepy village benefits from the nearby Surselva sports centres.
Trun at an altitude of 850 m on the north side of the Vorderrhein (river) was the site of the foundation of the «Graue Bund» (Grey League) in1424, its assize town until 1798 and meeting venue until 1814. The Grey League was one of three leagues that together formed a free state area in today’s Canton Graubunden, which existed until the break-up of the old Swiss Confederacy in 1798. Until 1912, Trun was also an important horse-post station.
Next to the noteworthy St. Anna Chapel, is the court of honour to the Grey League dating from 1701. The former Klosterhof Cuort Ligia Grischa, the meeting place of the Grey League from 1428, now houses the Sursilvan Museum. The heraldic hall and large library of Surselva are museum attractions.
Many artists live and work in the Surselva and Trun region. One of the most famous is Alois Carigiet, the illustrator of children’s books such as «Schellenursli» or «Flurina». The Cuort Ligia Grischa Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to Carigiet with exhibits including various oil paintings and original sketches on «Flurina». Further traces of Alois Carigiet are found in Trun: the house where he was born near the parish church, his home in Flutginas, the cemetery with his cross, his «last picture» in the chapel of rest, murals on various houses, etc.
Well worth a visit in the area is the still important Maria Licht pilgrimage church in Acladira dating from 1664. The Rhine offers wild and imposing rafting tours. Bikers can experience tours in various grades of difficulty. The peaks of Tödi, Cavistrau and Pez Nadels fascinate mountaineers and alpinists. In winter, cross-country skiers will find superb runs and winter-walking trails open up a world of winter white. And as an alternative to local skilifts, the winter-sport resorts of Flims-Laax, Obersaxen, Brigels-Andiast-Waltensburg etc. are not far away.
