Romont is situated on an isolated hill (its name is derived from the French for «round hill») at 780 metres above sea level in the upper Glâne Valley. The settlement was founded in the 10th century by the Dukes of Burgundy. Peter II of Savoy made Romont into a strategically important fortified military base on the central plateau. Large sections remain of the 13th century perimeter wall that was repeatedly fortified and extended throughout the centuries. The most important fortification is the imposing Tour à Boyer, which is Romont’s landmark and visible from miles around. This small picturesque town has several well-preserved 17th to 19th century bourgeois and patrician houses.

The castle with beautiful courtyard at the highest point of the town has been home to the Musée Suisse du Vitrail or Swiss Museum of Stained Glass since 1981. The collection includes stained glass from mediaeval times to the present day. Public demonstrations can be watched at the workshop and courses in glass painting are held by prior arrangement. The museum owns a unique collection of glass painting objets d’art such as pictures, furniture and jewellery. The region’s glass painting theme path can be followed on foot, by bicycle or, in bad weather, by car.

The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in western Switzerland, stands opposite the castle. Two of the most interesting old buildings in the old town are the Restaurant de la Croix Blanche and the Hôtel du Cerf, both built in the 16th century. The Cistercian Abbey of Fille-Dieu, built in 1268, can be found beyond the city wall in the Glâne Valley. The convent buildings enclose a central courtyard and are built in an austere baroque style.

The 16th century Mézières Castle houses a wallpaper museum (Musée du papier peint): castellan Frédéric-François-Victor de Diesbach had all of the rooms at Mézières decorated with wallpaper in accordance with the latest Paris fashion when he restored the castle between 1787 and 1789.
