Familiy tour Rhone

From the salt mines to puffing steam locomotives and dangerous pirate ships; over the peaceful Rhone dam, on through the Chablais vegetable gardens and past vineyards and the Le Bouveret fun park as you make your way to the reed-rich Lake Geneva delta.
In Chablais, the fertile alluvial plain with the steep mountain slopes, the tamed Rhone forms the border between the cantons of Valais and Vaud. Northeast of Bex, salt has been mined since 1684 and whoever wishes to do so can visit a part of the huge underground labyrinth. Back by the river a long and peaceful cycling stretch along the dam follows, accompanied by the rapidly flowing Rhone in its channelled bed. Small villages such as Ollon and Vouvry or the pretty town of Aigle with its imposing castle and characteristic vineyards are seen to the left and right - and are in any case definitely worth a detour.

Wheels spinning fast, you’re soon in for a change of scenery as huge fuel tanks, industrial zones, gravel works and the Chavalon power station perched high above appear and the sleepy calm along the dam comes to an end. Heading left you're on the road to the Bouveret holiday and bathing resort, as well as fun-filled Swiss Vapeur Parc adventure world for children, where true-to-life 1:4 scale locomotives let off steam and the Aquaparc sees kids turn into pirates defending their ship; sharks plunging into the wild waters and dolphins dancing on the waves.

Back to peace and quiet, the route leads eastwards to the natural «Les Grangettes» Rhone delta, where birds hide in the reeds, rare orchids bloom and you perceive what sounds like an eerie groan over the wetland moors. Finally, in the Villeneuve village you catch your first glimpse of Lake Geneva and the Chillon castle, breathe in the scents of the Vaud Riviera and can enjoy a glass of wine in one of the numerous restaurants in the small and lovely old town.
