Liechtensteiner Rheintalroute
Sargans–Altstätten
En route in Ländle, between the Rhine plain and mountain crags, past the prince’s castle in Lichtenstein’s Vaduz. Over Eschnerberg, and via the cross-border cycle route to the medieval ambiance of Feldkirch. Back through riverside woodland to the Rhine.
Over the Rhine bridge at Trübbach into the Ländle region, a small flat stretch of land between a bend in the Rhine and an angular crag in the east. Liechtenstein was once a poor agricultural country, but today it’s a high-tech industrial and service-oriented region with around 35,000 inhabitants.
The Gutenberg castle in Balzers looks peacefully over the prosperous businesses, while in Vaduz roubles roll like an avalanche, 1500 bank employees administer over 100 billion Swiss francs. High up, lofty and enthroned, the castle of the prince; cyclists follow the drainage canals to Eschnerberg, a prehistoric ridge.
The new Mauren – Feldkirch cycling path across the border is very cyclist-friendly. Feldkirch in Austria’s Vorarlberg has maintained its medieval character, with cobbled alleyways and arcades to amble through. In riverside woodland, the route descends to Illspitz, back to the Rhine, again the border bridge; a slight haze lies over the flat Montlinger Riet in Canton St.Gallen.
