Alter Bernerweg
Estavayer-le-Lac–Baden
Through the former peasant lands of the Bernese Lords. Passing historic towns such as Estavayer-le-Lac, Payerne, Laupen, Bern, Aarwangen, Aarburg, Lenzburg. And in between, idyllic nature e.g. Auried in Kleinbösigen, small tranquil lakes and large forests.
The route leads through the former peasant lands of the Bernese Lords, passing historic towns such as Estavayer on Lac de Neuchatel, Payerne with its abbey church, Laupen at the confluence of the Saane and Sense rivers, through the aspiring west-end of Bern, the small bridge towns of Aarwangen and Aarburg, through Lenzburg on the castle hill to Baden on the River Limmat.
In between, idyllic nature areas, e.g. at Auried in Kleinbösigen, forested moraine knolls in Laupen forest, or the much visited Moossee lake, bird islands in the River Aare and the Boowald, Canton Aargau’s largest forest. Despite the shrinking countryside, expanding agglomerations and buzzing, dead-straight arterial roads, it’s still possible to find romantic corners and enchanting paths in the Swiss Mittelland region.
