Staffelegg

Staffelegg between Küttigen and Asp/Densbüren in Canton Aargau is a major pass over the Jura Mountains on the route between cantonal capital Aarau and the Fricktal (Frick valley).
Staffelegg at 621 m altitude is one of the lowest Jura mountain passes. Bedded into the characteristic folds of the Jura Mountains, it is surrounded by several accessible peaks such as the Wasserflue (843 m) and Gisliflue (772m). There are post bus connections over the Staffelegg pass from Frick to Aarau and a popular excursion restaurant at the summit. The Herzberg conference centre offering a wide range of courses and amenities is situated in the immediate vicinity.

A road and path link Staffelegg with the Bänkerjoch (alternative spelling: Benkerjoch), a neighbouring minor pass road (674m) between Küttigen and Wölfinswil continuing to Frick. This route marks the old border with Austria; close to Küttigen there is a building that was a former customs house.

There are several small Jura pass crossings over which hikers can access the Jura high route towards Hauenstein, with spectacular views over the hilly terrain of the Aargau and Basel-Land Jura to the Schwarzwald (Black Forest), the Swiss Mittelland and the Alps.

A geology theme path leads from Küttigen to Staffelegg, an easy route of around 2.5km distance with information on the formation of the characteristic Jura folds, minerals and fossils found in the area. You may even find small fossils at a former quarry along the way.

Highlights

  • Geological theme path – information trail giving hikers the opportunity to find small fossils at a disused quarry or along the route.
