Scuol

Scuol, the main town in the Lower Engadine, and neighbouring Tarasp and Vulpera are situated in a wide, forested valley basin of the Inn. Scuol has a wide choice of leisure attractions including the thermal spa and winter-sport mountain of Motta Naluns.
The Vereina railway tunnel with car transport makes Scuol fast and safe to reach all year round. Nevertheless, the Lower Engadine (Engiadina bassa) remains a quiet valley off the beaten tourist track. The Lower Engadine is sheltered by mighty mountain chains: to the north the Silvretta group and to the south the Engadine Dolomites and the area is thus known for its dry and sunny climate.

Geological features allow hot gases from the bowels of the earth to pass through a gas-permeable layer of rock and reach the upper rock strata. This turns groundwater into thermal water at over 25° C, used as mineral springs in the Scuol-Tarasp-Vulpera region. Scuol is home to the Bogn Engiadina Scuol, a health and experience spa and sauna landscape with magnificent mountain views. The complex also includes a Roman-Irish bath with a lengthy bathing ritual.

Sightseeing attractions in Scuol include the late-Gothic St. Georg Church from 1516 and well-preserved town houses. The lower part of the village, «Scuol Sot» has valuable old dwellings, a picturesque square with a large fountain and a small regional museum.

SUMMER

Scuol’s mountain, the Motta Naluns, is a great starting point for hikers, bikers and paragliders. On the south side of the valley is the hiking and touring region of Val S-charl, adjoining the Swiss National Park. The valley is also a great place to enjoy the young River Inn, on foot, by bike or with river rafting: the Inn’s white-water gorges are without doubt among the best rafting stretches in the Alps.

WINTER

with 80 km of prepared pistes and 12 lift installations, Motta Naluns (altitude 1250 to 2785 m) is one of Switzerland’s middle-sized ski regions. The majority of pistes are easy to medium difficulty. The regional highlight is the 10 km-long «dream piste » down to Sent. The large Salaniva/Champatsch/Salez region is freerider country. The lower Engadine offers cross-country skiers 72 km of runs (classic and skating), including the 28 km-long piste from Scuol to Martina along the Inn.

Highlights

  • Swiss National Park – the country’s largest nature reserve with a fabulous wealth of Alpine flora and fauna in the untouched landscape of the Lower Engadine.
  • Engadine Bad Scuol – a spa and sauna landscape- with stunning views of imposing mountains and Switzerland’s first Roman-Irish spa.
  • Tarasp Castle – landmark of the Lower Engadine, a picture-book castle from the 11th century ruling the countryside from its position on a one hundred-metre-high cliff.
  • Old villages such as Guarda, Sent, Ftan – picturesque spots with typically ornate Engadine houses on the sunny side of the Lower Engadine.
