Sweet-smelling pine and larch forests surround the Engadine resort and spa town of Pontresina (1820 m) in the highest side valley of the Upper Engadine. The long drawn-out village is a popular centre for hiking and climbing.
Pontresina enjoys a sunny, sheltered location at the entrance to the Val Bernina (Berninatal) on a south-west facing terrace just 7 km from St. Moritz. The first hotels for guests were built as early as the 19th century. The charm of this medium-sized resort lies in the architectural blend of fine old Engadine houses with their typical "sgraffito” (decorated walls) from the 17/18th centuries and the elegant hotels in Belle Epoque style. A modern conference centre completes the village’s infrastructure.
The mountain pass and, since the early 20th century, the Bernina railway line lead over the 2330 m high Bernina Pass towards Italy. At sightseeing speed, the Bernina Express passes the massive Morteratsch Glacier. From the Ospizio Bernina station there is a lovely view over the mountain lakes of Lago Nero and Lago Bianco. From the Alp Grüm stop, you can see a wide view as far as the Puschlav valley in southern Grisons.
Summer
There are 580 km of footpaths in the Engadine. The most popular places to walk around Pontresina are the wild and romantic Val Roseg (Rosegtal) and the Muottas Muragl (2453 m), reached by funicular railway and offering a magnificent view over the lakes of the Upper Engadine. The popular high alpine walk from Muottas Muragl to Alp Languard is also a themed trail on the subject of global warming. Of the 300 km of Nordic Walking trails, some form part of the "Pontresina Bernina Nordic Park". For mountain bikers, there are a further 150 km of bike trails.
Winter
Two nearby ski areas attract winter sports fans: Challenging is the ski area on Piz Lagalb (2959 m) with its fine areas of deep snow. The Diavolezza (2973 m), with its 3 lifts and 9 km of slopes, is particularly popular, on account of its not-too-difficult slopes and fine views. The other skiing areas in the Engadine, offering over 50 lifts and about 350 km of slopes, are easily accessible by car, bus or railway.
Of the 50 km of cross-country skiing track, the high-altitude track on the Diavolezza, 12 km long, is especially noteworthy. About 30 km of winter walks are specially prepared around Pontresina. The Philosophers’ Way goes from Muottas Muragl in a big loop up to the Val Muragl and back.
