Blatten–Kühmatt–Fafleralp–Blatten
Stunning beauty on this trail from Blatten to Fafleralp settlement, straight through the UNESCO World Heritage area. As you pass by sun-bronzed houses amid the Bernese Alps on the way up to the Alpine settlement of Guggistafel, you'll really get into peak condition!
Blatten is the commune with the largest area in the Lötschental, and it is also the furthermost commune in the valley. With its narrow alleyways, snug restaurants and blackened timber houses and barns, this village exudes an abundance of charm. Clip on your cross-country skis right next to the "Blatten Post" station and the large parking area.
The trail starts out over relatively flat terrain as far as Kühmatt, a regional destination for pilgrims. You can take a look at the baroque Chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary here. There are votive paintings inside. Built in 1654/55, this chapel is a popular subject for photography. After another section that ascends quite gently, a series of hairpin bends will take you up to the Fafleralp settlement. The trail leads around the Hotel Fafleralp. Did you know? Charlie Chaplin was a regular guest here. "There's nothing more beautiful than the Fafleralp," he once wrote in the hotel's guest book. That's understandable: there is a beautiful view of the valley and the striking Bietschhorn peak, and the countryside seems utterly intact.
The loop takes you further into the splendour of unspoiled nature in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage area. The trail winds past the Alpine hamlet of Gletscherstafel with views of the Lötschenlücke pass and the Lang glacier. It makes a turn immediately after the hamlet. At the Fafleralp parking area, it then makes another detour to Faflermattä, where you glide across the plain in several loops. Below the Hotel Fafleralp, the trail takes you back to Blatten again along the same route.
