Nordic Surselva
Disentis–Trun
This route runs mainly below the villages, close to the upper Rhine. It takes you through forests of alder trees and across open fields. If you are feeling more energetic, you can ski from Trun to Disentis.
The start of the Nordic Surselva trail is on the Salaplauna meadow, by the abbey farm and the Sennaria Surselva cheese-making business. The loops going around the gently sloping Salaplauna are ideal for warming up. Skiers can enjoy the beautiful view of the village of Disentis and its Benedictine abbey which was founded in the 8th century and is therefore one of the oldest in Europe. You can still see the foundations of two churches dating from that time. The baroque abbey was built between 1683 and 1704.
When you reach the bottom of the valley, you embark on a smooth stretch through charming scenery beside the upper Rhine. First on one side of the river, then on the other, passing through alder forests and little hamlets, you speed along the valley towards your destination. In the depths of winter, it can be quite cold in the valley, because for large stretches of the trail the sun's rays never reach down into the valley. Sometimes there is hoar frost on the grasses, bushes and fences, creating incredibly beautiful winter wonderlands.
In Trun it is possible to add on some extra loops if you want to extend your day's skiing a little longer. Then you return to your starting point in Disentis on the «little red train» of the Rhaetian Railways.
